This article is an introduction to street piano locations in Japan that I have visited.
This time I would like to introduce a street piano that can be played amidst the illuminations in Minatomirai, Yokohama, Kanagawa prefecture.
This street piano is a limited-time attraction, and the source of the article is from last winter. It is uncertain whether it will be held again this year, but it is still a recommended spot.
Even without the street piano, this location offers a wonderful night view and various shopping opportunities, so I would also like to introduce them as well.
PIANO TYPE:upright piano
Although the information is from last winter, this is a stylish street piano that can be played under the illuminations. It is rare to find a piano that can be played under the illuminations throughout Japan, at least as far as I know. This street piano was installed in 2022 to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the Yokohama “MIRAITO” illumination event.
Anyone, from children to adults, can play the piano. When I played it, there were about 10 people in line, and the waiting time was around 20-30 minutes. However, it was a great opportunity to play in such an environment that cannot be experienced elsewhere.
Installation period: Limited time
From Thursday, December 1st, 2022 to Sunday, December 25th, 2022.
Playing hours
From 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
Installation location
“Art Square” at Gran Mall Park.
A 2-minute walk from Minatomirai Station on the Minatomirai Line.
An 11-minute walk from JR Keihin-Tohoku Line, Negishi Line, and Municipal Subway Blue Line.
The location may be a bit difficult to find, but you can find it by walking towards the Mark Is Minato Mirai store.

- Please do not damage or modify the piano in any way.
- Please be considerate of other visitors and refrain from making loud noises while playing the piano.
- Please dispose of any trash or belongings properly before leaving the area.
- Please follow all instructions and rules posted at the installation site.
- Please use the piano at your own risk. The management is not responsible for any accidents or injuries that may occur while using the piano.
- It is outdoors and during winter nights, it will be cold.
- Since the playing time is short, there is a possibility that you may not be able to play if you arrive at the last minute.
Famous nearby spots.
This area has a lot to offer, including shopping, museums (such as the Cup Noodles Museum and art museums), the Akarenga (Red Brick) area, Chinatown, parks, and more, so it may not be possible to see everything in just one day.
I will translate your request: “I will introduce you to some photos of the Minato Mirai area.”
Shopping mall: Queens Tower
There is a large Christmas tree at Queens Tower. It is decorated during the Christmas season. When the photo was taken, there was a collaboration event with Harry Potter, and the tree was decorated with Harry Potter items.
The underground 3rd floor of Queens Tower is the Minatomirai Station of the Minatomirai Line. Actually, this station opened in 2004, so it is a new station that has not yet been around for 20 years.
Cup Noodles Museum
You can see the history of cup ramen, which many people love. You can also make your own original cup ramen and it’s a great souvenir.
Yokohama Cosmo World
Yokohama Cosmo World is an amusement park located in Minato Mirai, with a Ferris wheel as its landmark. The Ferris wheel, especially the night view, is very popular and often has long lines, with waits to get on the wheel often becoming long as well. From the Ferris wheel, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Minato Mirai, and it’s a great place to admire the scenery.
Last words.
Although the street piano is available during the Christmas season, Yokohama Minato Mirai is a place that can be enjoyed at any time. Please also enjoy it when you visit Yokohama for sightseeing. It’s about a 30-minute walk from Chinatown and there is also a park and the unmentioned GANDAM factory nearby, so you can enjoy a walk even without a specific destination.
I would be happy if you became interested in the street pianos in Japan.
And please enjoy Japan to the fullest!
